What is Human Resources really all about?

Some people says it is a department in an organization, while others says it is just a function. Well both are right, human resources is both a department and a function.

Human Resource as a Department

As a department, it is a division of a large organization, or an area of special expertise or in other words responsibility. It is responsible in managing the human resource activities, from recruitment and onboarding, as well as compensation and benefits, also learning and development, performance monitoring, compliance and workers safety, and related to separation and retirement from the company. So in simplest terms, the human resource as a department is a group of people who are responsible in managing the employee life cycle and of course administering their benefits.

Human Resource as a Function

As a function it make up the processes, the practices and the strategies so that it will be able to attract, develop and keep the employees who contribute to the overall success of the company. Hence human resource exists to help the employees thrive.

Human Resource as a Workforce

Human resource also refers to the workforce—the people who are employed by the organization. Here we see that human resource recognizes that employees of the company are the most critical asset. That is why human resource helps support the needs of their employees like providing growth in their career, offering continuous education, they provide training and support for their managers, and supporting their employees health and wellness.

The Primary Goal of Human Resource

Regardless of the size of the company or organization, human resource primary goal is to maximize employee productivity while protecting the company.

Therefore we can say human resource plays a significant role not only in developing positive business culture and improving employee engagement and productivity but in aligning the organization’s business objectives and employees’ needs and their aspirations.
